Types
of windows available
There are many types of windows available. Following are just a
few you can choose from:
Bay windows are usually made up of at least three windows. The center
window may be stationary with the two side units moveable; or all three
(or
more windows) may be stationary. One distinctive look would be to
project
the side windows out from the exterior, possibly at 30, 45 or 90 degree
angles.
One type of window provides for low rates of air leakage. This would be
the awning type window. This characteristic includes a top hinge that
opens outwards. The sash then closes by pressing against the window
frame. Screens would need to be placed on the interior of the window
frame with the awning type window.
Windows based on a side hinge are called casement windows. The benefits
of using casement windows include: low air leakage, a sash that closes
by pressing to the frame and interior placed screens. Better ventilation
is a benefit too since casement windows project outward.
Double hung windows contain a feature to slide each sash vertically. The
level of ventilation is controlled from a small opening to one half of
the
total glass dimension. Screens may be placed either on the inside or
outside of the window frame. However, with Single hung windows, only the
bottom sash will slide.
The most fundamental window is the fixed frame window. These windows
are generally inoperable or non-venting.
Both sashes slide horizontally with Double-Sliding windows, whereas
with single sliding windows, only one sash will slide. The ventilation
area
can be adjusted and screens can be placed on the inside or outside, as
with double and single hung windows.
