Window functions The grade of glass must be selected once you are aware of the various window options. Your decision as to the type of glass should be based on energy efficiency. The following are the types of glass you may choose: Clear Glass: This is clearly the favorite material for home windowpanes. However, you may choose to customize the appearance as to the fitting or techniques such as glazing or cutting. Glazing may reduce heat loss and condensation. Low Emissivity Glass (Low-E Glass): This type of glass enables a reduction in the heat transfer back through the window. The coating may reflect 40% to 70% of the heat, which is normally transmitted. Fortunately, the amount of light passing through the window is not inhibited. Heat Absorbing Glass: Heat gain may be reduced utilizing special tints which absorbs up to 45% of incoming solar energy. However, part of the heat will pass through the windows by way of conduction or re-radiation. Reflective Glass: This glass is preferred during the summer months because of its capability to control solar heat gain. This is because the glass is coated with a reflective film. There are two additional advantages to this type of glass: it decreases the passage of light during the entire year and it diminishes solar transmittance.
